| The presentation of "La Raza" award is a yearly tradition of Gamma Phi Sigma "Hermanos Unidos" Fraternity, Inc. started in November 2005 at Temple University, in Philadelphia PA. The award is given out in recognition of an individual's personal and professional commitment to the advancement of Latinos in the realm of higher education and beyond. It is a symbol of gratitude in which the Latino student body gives thanks to a professional Latino campus-leader.
A plaque is presented to commemorate the selfless acts of academic and administrative assistance to the campus Latino community. Since its inception, "La Raza" Award has been presented to Lydia Colon of the Temple University Financial Aid Department and Maritza Santiago of the Temple University Student Activities Department, David Jones of the University of Maryland Student Activities Department, and Areliz Hernandez of the University of Maryland Class of 2009. All the individuals presented with this award are regarded as priceless assets to their respective Latino communities. Their ingenuity, poise and compassion for the advancement of Latinos serve as exemplary qualities that positively shape the future success of our people.
